a true rarity from salsouls vast archive here, one for the bonafide boogie heads out there. this has gotta be one of the rarest surface records in existence, 3 cuts of that amazing early 80s funk that only surface can do! a licensed late 90 s pressing of this particular ep became highly sought after and has since been impossible to track down for even the most dedicated diggers. 3 full length jams presented here, including a wondrous mix from the legendary shep pettibone of the classic falling in love, also included are the previously unreleased stop holding back and when your x wants you back. this whole record is pure heat, one for the aficionados. properly licensed, wonderfully remastered and reissued for the dancefloor! you re not gonna find a more solid, well rounded example of that killer post-disco, electronic funk than this collection of cuts. essential. snoozing not advised!

the kalita sound is becoming more clearly defined with each release, as the london-based label continues to mine the rich history of overlooked disco, funk and soul from america and africa. darryl douglas inc. originally released -holding on- in 1981, and when you listen to it it s no wonder that second hand copies used to fetch dizzying prices. it s a perfect get down jam that no doubt used to delight switched on diggers with money to burn, but a track this perfectly crafted for good times should never be confined to the ivory tower of the collectors. -jesus is the light- is the original b side, a slower devotional soul cut with gospel undertones.

repress , swedish disco aficionado drop out orchestra has been plying his trade in the world of slick edits and on-point party fodder for the best part of ten years now, and now he comes to riot gear with a sure fire club classic to share. there s no prizes for guessing the source material on -holding on-, but in this context the evergreen crossover jam gets a modern steroid injection, having never sounded more contemporary than here. yam who? sidles in for a remix that does a subtle job, simmering down some of the familiar vocals and making a slinkier cut that still hits hard. -knucklehead- brings a little more jacking drum machine action to the table, but still disco is the main order of the day, while -where is my man- takes the prize with its on point jazz funk licks and stomping beat.

first time i heard this track out was d.jing with adrian gibson, booker/manager for the london jazz cafe in its hay day in the early 2000s, i thought it was some crazy obscusre early jacksons 45. i had no idea what it was but i liked it and it stuck with me. as my eyes were on 45 s at the time it passed me by until numero group reissued it on their fabulous soul messengers compilation (essential purchase if you don t own). after quite a bit of badgering rob sevier, co-owner of numero group, let this grace my format of choice, so here we are, both sides first outing as a single.
